The Song of Songs

Song of Songs

Song of Songs

The Song of Songs is the Bible’s love song. But who sings this song?

While the literal words tell of the passionate love of a man and a woman, the early rabbis understood the verses as an allegory of the love between God and Israel. In The Song of Songs: the Honeybee in the Garden, I present an illuminated manuscript in which I employ parchment, fine calligraphy, color and precious metal leaf to interpret the poetry according to both of these seemingly contradictory readings. The illuminations draw upon both classic rabbinic texts and modern scholarship, offering not only pleasure to the eye, but also an acclaimed visual interpretation of this beloved poetry. The work was published by eminent The Jewish Publication Society in 2005, and a traveling exhibit of the work toured the US for several years following publication.

I am delighted to be able to offer you four ways to experience this joyous work. The links above will lead you to a gallery of a portion of the 65 illuminations, information about purchasing the book from JPS,  acquiring a signed and dedicated copy from me, and information on the planned Limited Edition facsimile of the work. Other links will lead you to purchase information on limited edition prints of individual paintings, and a schedule of my upcoming talks, which frequently include this work.
